There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.

Region 1 Assistant Superintendent of Schools

On Thursday, February 16, 2017, the Region 1 Board of Education formally selected Lisa B. Carter as its new Assistant Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2017.  Carter, an educator in Region 1 for more than 14 years, has served as Principal of Salisbury Central School since 2011. She began her education career as a Social Studies teacher at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, where, in addition to being an exceptional teacher, she collaborated with her colleagues to initiate the student exchange with China and the Civic Life Project.

Prior to teaching, Carter worked for the U.S. State Department and for Union Oil Company of California, where she focused on the development of programs and relationships in China.  She also served as a general management consultant with the Hay Group, specializing in organizational effectiveness and management succession planning.

Ms. Carter holds a B.S. in Mandarin Chinese and Business from Georgetown University, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Southern California, and a Sixth Year in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University.

Carter’s leadership experiences have all served her well. She stood out in a very strong pool of candidates.
The Search Committee, made up of the six local boards of education chairs in Region 1 plus the Region 1 Board, conducted a comprehensive search to fill the position.

Mary Broderick, Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Search Services consultant, conducted focus groups and a survey designed to define the qualities of an ideal assistant superintendent for Region 1. She synthesized that information into a Leadership Profile, which became a blueprint for screening applicants.

The Search Committee, chaired by Jonathan Moore of Kent, interviewed several semi-finalists and two finalists. Ms. Carter emerged as the unanimous choice from this very strong pool. Lisa has won rave reviews from teachers, parents, and colleagues. As one colleague wrote, “Lisa is an exceptional administrator who brings to the job not only an impressive experiential background, but also an inspiring intellect. She is organized, resourceful and extremely dedicated to the region and her work with the teachers, students and families reflects this dedication.”

Region 1 Board of Education chair Andrea Downs called Carter “a beloved and highly effective leader and educator.”  Region1 Board of Education member and committee chair Jonathan Moore said: “Lisa impressed the committee with her passion for engaging children and her commitment to energizing stakeholders in collaboration.”

Ms. Carter will officially begin on July 1, 2017. Mr. Moore said the Region 1 Board of Education will host a reception on March 6, 2017, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, rm. 133, to allow students, staff, parents, and all members of the community a chance to meet Ms. Lisa Carter.
